Cosmetics and body care industry in the Netherlands - statistics & facts
Although the United States and several Asian countries, including China and Japan, dominate the global cosmetics and body care market, Europe also plays a competitive role within the industry. In recent years, some of the frontrunners of European cosmetics and personal care had been Germany, France, and Italy, each accounting for an estimated market share of around 15 percent. While the Netherlands did not lead the list in terms of revenue, the country’s domestic sales of cosmetics continue to grow and have increased considerably between 2021 and 2023.
In the last few years, the Dutch consmetics and personal care industry has gained new momentum and has seen its sales figures increase significantly. Stores that sell personal care products, such as drugstores, have even seen their retail sales grow by nearly eight percent in 2023, a considerable jump when compared to the last decade and a half.
Domestic revenue of cosmetic products
It goes without saying that there are countless kinds of body care and cosmetic goods sold on the Dutch market, from deodorants and shower products to oral and skin care items. Certain product categories have experienced growth in the past few years while others have had to take a turnover hit. For instance, the country’s domestic soap revenue had dropped by some 16 million euros between 2021 and 2023. In contrast, domestic sales revenue of fragrances had increased by over 135 million euros within that same timeframe.Cosmetic consumer habits in the Netherlands
It is frequently the case that consumers look at price above all else when buying goods. That said, when it comes to personal care products, other considerations take the cake: as of June 2024, over half of Dutch shoppers said they looked at quality when buying personal care items, making it the leading criterion. At just under 50 percent, skin compatibility was the second-most important consideration for those buying body care and cosmetic products. The desire for a low price only ranked fourth that year. When asked what types of personal care products they used, the majority of consumers in the Netherlands mentioned oral and dental care products, as well as personal hygiene products, such as bath products, deodorants, and shaving creams.In the last few years, the Dutch consmetics and personal care industry has gained new momentum and has seen its sales figures increase significantly.
